so the other day, my friends wanted to try this place at Iluma called Ramen Champion. i personally am pretty doubtful of any place that has the words "ramen" and "champion" as their name, and especially if they just took over the overpriced and ridiculously-named place with the damn stupid ninjas on the rooftop, but i figured i should give it a shot. three words: WASTE. OF. TASTEBUDS. had the Gantetsu Ramen, because it hailed to be from Sapporo (butter and corn!) and it was tragic. the very yellow noodles weren't even cooked properly, some parts were still hard and stuck together. the soup was unimpressionable, the charshuu had freaking CARTILAGE, and it was just.. miserable. at one point we were wondering if they had just picked japanese expats off the streets and hired them to just stand around the kitchen for authenticity's sake. "hey look, we have japanese people at the kitchen! our ramen is definitely japanese!" not when your japanese keeps talking on his cell phone, occasionally flipping some noodles while your chinese nationals do the real work. the whole place was trying so hard, trying too hard? with their energetic greetings and going with the whole Marche card concept, but there will be flaws in such a system especially if your staff isn't alert. when i went to get beverages, the two Malay girls at the station kept distracting each other to the point where they evidently forgot to charge my card for the drinks. their loss hurhur. i'm a ramen nazi, so i might be overly harsh, but seriously, for the price and portion and standard, you can just pay a couple more dollars and go to Baikohken and Nantsuttei. do your tastebuds a favor. |
