why is it that when a person expresses extreme emotion outright, like annoyance or enthusiasm, they are told to 'chill' and 'relax'? i don't understand what changed along the way that we were growing up, that now to suppress signs of extreme feelings is considered normalcy. what is wrong with expressing enthusiasm over something or showing that you're irritated with whatever's happening? that's being genuine to yourself, isn't it? why should you 'chill out' when you're obviously excited or agitated?
we are beings of rationality, but also emotion. more often than not, we are more susceptible to experiencing whatever the situation causes us to feel at the time, rather than taking a step back to look at what's going on from a logical point of view before making a decision on how we should react.
i'm definitely more emotional than rational, especially when it comes to negative feelings. in most situations, my first instinct is to lash out with whatever i'm feeling at the time. so when i find myself having to contain that first upset feeling and faking a reaction that is considered 'acceptable' and 'normal' to others, i- i don't know. i hide it sometimes, just because i know that it is unpleasant and makes things awkward for everyone, but that doesn't make it better for me.
i've been told that communication is important and that i should address these feelings i have, but honestly i always have a problem with that. it might be due to egocentrism. either way, general rule in life - if you make a mess, you damn well clean it up.
just making a note here so i can look back again.
